In our sailboat and catamaran trips square to square We sail boats based on their year of construction, always as recent as possible. In this way we greatly reduce the possibility that the sailboat or catamaran may suffer a breakdown.

In addition, the new ships incorporate significant improvements compared to the older ones. They provide passengers with more comfort on board.

The Bali catamarans have entered the market as direct competitors to the Lagoon catamarans. In some respects they are already ahead of the pack. A 2019 model with little wear and tear:

The sundeck area with cushions in the bow is spectacular. The best in its sector.
The catamaran has a fly bridge, an upper deck for the skipper's helm. This offers much more space on both the upper and lower decks.
Its 4 bathrooms, one per cabin, give great privacy.
The Bali have incorporated conventional refrigerators like the ones at home in their boats. No more space problems in the fridges on the boats.

Lagoon catamarans currently dominate the yacht charter sector. The quality of their boats makes everyone who comes on board fall in love with them and many do not go back to sailing after having been on a catamaran:

We highlight the exaggerated width of these models, which offer a beam of 7.25 metres.
Comfort on board is remarkable with plenty of space both inside and out.
The optimisation of the cockpit allows for a large table with plenty of seating space.
The helm station is set back from the cockpit passageway, giving the customer more space.

General

Depending on the composition and budget of your group, it is more convenient to sail in a private boat than in a shared one. You can opt for different types of boats: sailboats, catamarans and schooners are the most representative.

After years of experience of sailing on many boats, good and bad, big and small, we understand that the boat will be suitable for the characteristics of the client and the sailing destination.

Different factors in deciding which boat you need:

On-board comfort required.
Importance of sailing for you.
Budget.
Navigation area.
Number of passengers.
Profile of your group.

Each type of boat has different characteristics, which we will detail in the following lines:

Sailing in sailboats

Sailing vessels are the ships that better to sail. If you like to hoist the sails continuously, the sailboat is the best option.

On the other hand, sailing ships are the ones that offer a best price/person. They are generally cheaper than catamarans and schooners. If your budget is not large, the sailboat is the best option again.

In order to choose the right sailing yacht you should consider the number of passengers you are and the budget available to you.

Depending on the number of passengers, the ship should have a different number of cabins. And it should be larger or smaller.
Depending on your budget, you will be able to sail on a newer and bigger or older and smaller sailboat. Thus varying your comfort.

Sailing boat depending on the number of passengers:

2 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 2 doubles, 1 for skipper
Metres in length: 9-10
Price/passenger: high

Sailing on a sailboat for 2 persons can be considered a luxury in many cases. The price per person can be quite high. In principle, these small sailing yachts are not meant to cover long distances in a week.

3 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 3 doubles, 1 for skipper
Metres in length: 10-11
Price/passenger: high

The price/person for 3 passengers is not good. The most advisable is to try to find at least 4 passengers to be able to share costs and get a better price/person.

4 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 3 doubles
Metres in length: 10-12
Price/passenger: half

It's starting to be a good number to sail a boat. The price per person starts to go down.

5 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 3 or 4 doubles
Metres in length: 12-14
Price/passenger: half

Odd numbers were never good for sailing and trying to get a good price per person, as sailing ships do not have single cabins.

In this case we have two options. One is a sailboat with 3 double cabins, the 3 doubles for the client + skipper sleeps in the saloon (not all skippers accept sleeping in the saloon).
The other option, and the best, is to opt for a 4 double cabins yacht, 3 double cabins for the client + 1 double cabin for the skipper.

6 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 4 doubles
Metres in length: 13-15
Price/passenger: lower-middle

This is the perfect number to sail a sailboat of the right size and get a good price/person.

7 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 4 doubles and 1 single or 5 doubles
Metres in length: 14-16
Price/passenger: lower-middle

We have the same case as with 5 passengers. We have again two options. One is to opt for a sailboat with 4 double cabins, 4 doubles for the client + skipper sleeps in the saloon.

Another option and the most suitable is a sailing boat with 5 cabins, 4 double cabins for the client + 1 double or single cabin for the skipper.

8 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 4 doubles and 1 single or 5 doubles
Metres in length: 15-16
Price/passenger: under

From this point onwards the price per passenger decreases significantly. One option is a sailboat with 4 double cabins + 1 single cabin. Another option is a sailboat with 5 double cabins, 4 doubles + 1 double for the skipper.

9 or 10 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 5 doubles and 1 single or 6 doubles
Metres in length: 16-17
Price/passenger: very low

Good price/passenger at the expense of space/passenger. From this point on, the space/passenger ratio decreases considerably, so it is advisable to opt for very large yachts so as not to lose comfort on board, or even less so. A sailboat with 6 cabins is the most recommendable, 5 double cabins for the client + 1 double or single cabin for the skipper.

11 passengers

VELERO
No. cabins: 6 doubles
Metres in length: 17-18
Price/passenger: very low

As in the previous case a good price/passenger at the expense of space/passenger.

11 people is perhaps starting to be too many people for a standard sailing boat and a large catamaran or schooner might work better.

A sailing yacht with 6 double cabins is the only thing that fits here, 5 doubles for the client + the skipper sleeps in the saloon.

Most of the cabins on the sailing ships are double-bed cabins, and not separate. Some double cabins are of bunk bedsbut short berths, not recommended for people taller than 1.75 metres.

Some sailboats have a small single cabin in the bow for the skipper, which is only accessible from the outside of the boat. Really small and, in most cases, not suitable for passengers.

Year of construction of the sailing vessel:

Pre-2006	Sailboats with antique designs. Without any of the improvements that the new models incorporate. State of preservation in some cases somewhat deteriorated. More prone to the possibility of something going wrong on board.	If you want to spend as little as possible.
Between 2006 and 2010	Slightly more elaborate designs and some improvements. Better condition than the previous group. Less likelihood of failure on board.	Recommended if you are on a tight budget.
Between 2011 and 2016	Sailboats significantly improved over the previous ones with remarkable changes. Most of them already incorporate a folding bathing platform at the stern for bathing. Virtually all of them already have two steering wheels and more optimised spaces on board with larger cockpits. Sailboats in a good state of preservation in many cases.	Recommended if you want a good boat without a big budget.
Between 2017 and 2019	Sailboats with very modern lines and with the latest improvements in recreational sailing. Some with electric toilets, upgraded interior lighting systems, good sound systems and larger cockpit table. Both interiors and exteriors in very good condition.	For groups who want the best for their holidays and don't mind paying a little more.

Personally I would like to we always recommend the sailboats in the last two rows.. In this way you are assured of a successful crossing, with little chance of any breakdowns.

However, if the maintenance of the boats is adequate, the other groups are equally valid, with boats suitable for any crossing as well.

Many times, just for paying 150 euros more per person, to give an example, you can go from a normal sailing boat to a big sailing boat. This is just a very debatable opinion.

Catamaran Sailing

The offer for sailing on catamarans is much smaller than that of sailing ships.

Catamarans have some advantages over sailboats for recreational boating, also some disadvantage. Although, again, this is debatable:

They have on board a lot of more space than sailboats, thus providing more comfort on board.
Also noteworthy is the solarium area on the bow.
The two enginesinstead of one on the sailboats.
The lounge area is at the same level as the outdoor bathtub, which means that we must not go up and down stairs all the time.
Catamarans are between a 30% and 50% more expensive than sailing ships.
The 90% of the catamarans are for a maximum of 8 passengers + crew (skipper or cook). With 4 double cabins + 2 single cabins for crew.

Catamaran depending on the number of passengers:

4 passengers or less

CATAMARAN
No. cabins: 3 or 4 doubles
Metres in length: 11
Price/passenger: very high

4 is a small number of people to opt for a catamaran, but if your budget allows it, it's great. You may have an extra cabin which you can use to store your luggage.

5 to 6 passengers

CATAMARAN
No. cabins: 4 doubles
Metres in length: 12
Price/passenger: high

Again 5 or 6 persons is a low number to get a good price/person for the final trip. But it is a very good number to get a good comfort on board.

7 to 8 passengers

CATAMARAN
No. cabins: 4 double cabins + 1 single cabin (skipper)
Metres in length: 12-14
Price/passenger: half

7 or 8 is the ideal number of people for catamaran sailing. The price per person decreases to an optimal value.

9 to 11 passengers

CATAMARAN
No. cabins: 5 double cabins + 1 single cabin (master)
Metres in length: 14-16
Price/passenger: high

There are very few catamarans with 5 double cabins and their prices soar. They tend to be premium catamarans, with a certain luxury.

It should be noted that all the catamarans have double cabins. Mostly a double bed together, some a slightly separate double bed.

It is more common on catamarans to opt for the hostessa or cook on board than on sailing yachts.

The reason for this is that most catamarans are equipped with 2 single cabins in the bow, designed specifically for the crew, skipper and/or possible cook. They are also larger and retain adequate space/passenger space, even with skipper and cook on board.

There are no 2 individual crew cabins on sailing vessels, only 1 for the skipper in some cases.

Regarding the year of construction, we can apply the same table as for sailboats (above).

Finally, it should be noted that, in general, the catamarans are better equipped than sailboats by having more usable space on board.

Equipment that catamarans usually carry:

Cushions on the bow sundeck.
220V power generator on board (also larger yachts).
Watermaker, in some cases, to have unlimited water on board.
Air conditioning (also some sailboats).
Upper deck, also called "fly bridge". Where the skipper has the command post in the heights. Very useful for separating spaces between passengers and skipper. Also for viewing the landscape from the heights.

Sailing in Gulets

If you are a large group, that needs a great comfort on board, then you should opt for a schooner. Also if there are in the group older people,with little mobility, gulets are the best option.

Main characteristics of a schooner:

Can accommodate on board up to 16 persons or more. Having from 4 to 8, or more, double cabins for passengers, i.e. you. On sailing ships and catamarans only 11-12 persons maximum.

They have a large size, and therefore spacious cabins and common areas. Large outside table for meals, large sundeck, cabins with private bathrooms, etc. This increases the comfort on board.

Van equipped with a multitude of aquatic equipment for fun. For example paddle surfing, jet skis, torpedoes, water scooters, canoes, etc.

They are manned with 3 crew members, as a minimum, on board who give you service. If the gulet is a big one, you have 4 crew members. Captain, cook, sailor and hostess.

Forced to contract half board. Normally you have breakfast and lunch on the schooner and then go down to the village or a restaurant on the shore for dinner. In some cases, you can also book full board, but this may not be the best option.

A price per person is high. From 1,500 euros and upwards.

Navigate motor-driven. Only once in a while they hoist the sails to take a photo, nothing else.

The trip itself has been good, for the places we have been able to enjoy and certainly for the company, but we would not repeat with this company, we had chosen precisely this one because of the comments and in our case they have not been adjusted to reality.
- The food was scarce, it had the feeling of being in camps, with a daily pasta menu with very basic preparations, and the breakfasts were also very scarce. Luckily in port we were buying our own bread and pastries to be able to have a good breakfast. We know that the cook who usually does the crossing failed and the new one was not used to these tasks on a ship, but I consider that the passengers should not pay for these inconveniences. The same goes for the mess and lack of cleanliness in the galley. I would like to thank Lucia and Lourdes, two crew members who took charge of the galley and solved a large part of the problem.
- The whole week without air conditioning due to a breakdown. We are in the month of July and it was really oppressive to sleep in port with so much heat at night.
Finally, this is a high value trip and we feel that we should have received better attention from MeleTravels, when we exposed the problems we encountered, they were all just a bunch of baloney without taking any blame.

An experience to repeat. I took a trip with a friend to Ibiza and Formentera and we were more than satisfied. First of all, the professionalism and formality shown by the staff. From the first moment, they informed us of the details of the trip, being totally clear and transparent with the conditions of the trip. Secondly, the skipper of the boat, Joan, has been charming, not only in his work, but also as a person. He has been very friendly and approachable, concerned for the welfare and safety of all crew members. He knows the area where he sails to perfection and always has alternatives for anchoring if the sea conditions are somewhat adverse. All this so that clients can make the most of the experience. Thirdly, the rest of the crew have been a pleasure to work with. We got along very well and created a great atmosphere on board. Finally, the area in which we have sailed and the experiences we have had (such as sunrises, sunsets, dinners on land or activities such as snorkelling or paddle surfing) have made a week seem like two days.
I recommend this company and this captain 100%. I will sail with them again!

Thank you Joan, this experience has been like a dream come true.
In love with the colour of the waters of Ibiza/ Formentera. I think everyone should experience this with Mêlée Travels. It has been a fascinating adventure and hard to match.

We have enjoyed the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets we have ever seen, including a full moon, unforgettable!
Sailing and feeling the wind while watching the sails dance or snorkelling off the most idyllic beaches is a wonder that is hard to describe.
I made the journey with a friend and met some wonderful people when I got there.

I highly recommend working with Melee Travels 100%. The boat Joan found for us was a 2022, brand new, beautifully finished, and we had no problems whatsoever during the week. We were very happy to have chosen such a new boat, totally recommendable to enjoy the experience to the fullest and not have any problems during the week. The boat company provider (manager) Michael, was fantastic, he was very helpful throughout the whole trip and was in constant communication with our skipper. He booked us scooters on islands, tables for dinner in restaurants and gave us lots of recommendations of things to do on each island. Our skipper Michael was also fantastic. He gave us lots of recommendations as well, super cautious with the weather and waves and cautious with the boat. It has been a dream to be able to see the sunrise in the middle of the sea, to reach deserted coves or islands that can only be reached by boat, the Greek islands are a wonder of nature and we have been able to discover them in the best company. I only hope to be able to repeat soon!

The experience has been unforgettable. Joan is not only an excellent, professional, friendly and discreet skipper, but he also adapts the trips to the conditions of the passengers. I did a crossing of the Kornatti islands with Mêlée travels. The sea is calm (ideal for beginners) and with unforgettable sunrises.
